Programme of Events - Saturday & Night!
As outlined in the programme of events, on Saturday there will be three sessions (two concurrent lectures and one laboratory workshop) running every 45 minutes up to lunchtime. All the speakers are top class, the only problem will be making a choice!
At 9.30am: we have Prof Luke O'Neill on 'Why it's great being a scientist - adventures in inflammation research', Dr Ronan McNulty & Dr Eric Finch on 'From Ernest Walton's atom splitting to the LHC and Higgs Boson'' and a Chemistry workshop in the Cocker laboratory.
At 10.30am: we have Prof Colin Hill 'Biological Warfare; using bacteria to combat infections', Dr Paul McCrory 'Letting the Fun in Science Out' demonstration lecture and a Physics workshop in the Cocker laboratory run by IoP.
Then there will be a 30 minute coffee break at 11.15 to 11.45 am for a chance to browse the many stands and link up with old friends and make new ones.
At 11.45am: We have Dr Ciara McMahon 'Lets talk about Radioactivity; how much radiation are the Irish exposed to?'', Alom Shaha, science teacher, film maker and author of 'The Young Atheist' on 'What's it all about?' Note the Biology DNA profile workshop must be booked in advance and starts early at 11.15am.
There will also be repeated drop in computer sessions in three computer rooms from 10am to 3pm. Two of these will be given by PDST teams in Biology & Chemistry and their new DVD's will be available for those who attend. In Chemistry, Michael O'Leary will also demonstrate Quizlet, a new learning and study resource and there will be a free gift called Quizlet Plus worth $15 for everyone who attends this session! "Yes there is one for everyone in the audience!" And the third computer room will have Bob Becker from the USA who will show "Screencasts, animations and video games for the chemistry class-room." The computers labs can only take 20 people at a time, so don't miss out on these hands-on sessions.
The leisurely lunchtime will also give attendees an opportunity to browse the 50 stands, but please note that there will also be short sessions during lunchtime too! These include Senior Fresher Trinity students who will give 15 minute presentations that they will bring out to your school on request, SciFest & SciClubs, ESTABLISH, Institute of Biology student awards, as well as some computer sessions continued from earlier.
Primary Science is also included in the programme and we have two talks running between 11.30 and 1.30pm which will be given by Liz Lawrence Chair-Elect of the ASE: “Inquiry-based Learning in older Primary Science” and Elena Setterfield: “Rubbish Science: learning Primary Chemistry, Biology and Physics from the materials in the recycle bin”
The afternoon will have demonstration shows from Bob Becker in CLLT (not in Hamilton Building) and Keith Gibbs, the Resourceful Physicist, as well as a stimulating talk from Dr Aoife McLysaght entitled "Everything I know about Life I learned from my Genome".
Finally there will be a plenary session with Dr Michael Mosley from the BBC on science communication. Please remember to fill in your feedback card and you will be in a draw for a spot prize at the conference dinner. All welcome, but advance booking required - see registration form on www.ista.ie
